About Us

Who We Are and Why We Exist

The Civil Liberties Coalition (UK) was founded on a simple belief: that freedom is not a privilege — it is a right that must be actively defended in every generation.

Our Story

Built for This Moment

We live in an era of unprecedented surveillance, data harvesting, and legislative creep. Governments and corporations collect more information about citizens than at any point in history — often without meaningful consent, oversight, or accountability.

The Civil Liberties Coalition (UK) was established to push back. Not through protest alone, but through building the legal, political, and technological infrastructure that makes freedom durable. We work with partner organisations, legal experts, and everyday citizens to advocate for rights that are clear, enforceable, and future-proof.

We are not affiliated with any political party. We are guided only by our founding principles and the voices of our member organisations.

Founding Principles

What We Stand For

Total Freedom

We believe in the broadest possible interpretation of personal liberty — the right to live, speak, and act without undue interference from the state or private actors.

Personal Autonomy

Every individual is the sovereign authority over their own life. Decisions about one's body, beliefs, and behaviour belong to the individual alone.

Rigorous Data Protection

Personal data is an extension of the self. It must be protected with the same vigour as any other fundamental right — not treated as a commodity.

Democratic Accountability

Power must be transparent and answerable. We advocate for open governance, independent oversight, and the right of citizens to scrutinise those who act in their name.

How We're Governed

A Member-Led Coalition

The Civil Liberties Coalition (UK) operates as a genuinely democratic body. We have no single leader, no top-down hierarchy, and no hidden agenda. Strategic direction is set collectively by our steering board — composed of representatives from partner organisations across civil society.

The Steering Board

Our board meets quarterly to set priorities, review campaigns, and ensure the coalition remains true to its founding principles. Any registered partner organisation is eligible to nominate a representative to the board.

Partner Organisations

Stronger Together

Our strength comes from the breadth and diversity of our coalition. We partner with legal charities, digital rights groups, academic institutions, community organisations, and policy think tanks — all united by a shared commitment to civil liberties.

Partner organisations will be listed here as the coalition grows. If your organisation shares our values, we'd love to hear from you.
